Biodiversity BC: Care and Aware of Endangered Species
Description
This program will reinforce that people are part of ecosystems; posing problems & solutions. The presentation will identify local endangered species and discuss specific as well as general threats to wildlife and biodiversity as well as possible solutions. The concepts of ecosystem services, keystone species, umbrella species, climate change, wildlife corridors, invasive species and cummulative impacts on habitat will be introduced. A slideshow will be given and handouts provided. The goal is to foster an appreciation for and understanding of the uniqueness, resilience and delicacy of naturally functioning ecosystems. Students will gain a sense of stewardship and sustainability.
Notes
Previous experience working as a wildlife educator at the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Education Centre where I participated in school programs as well as public outreach and education. I have presented about wolf conservation issues in various parts of BC, Alberta and Ontario on behalf of the Canadian Wolf Coalition. I have presented to my local community about endangered species in BC and the importance of biodiversity, with help and guidance from the Western Wilderness Committee. As a volunteer for Parks Canada for the previous 4 years tracking wolves I am aware of the rich wildlife in and around the Mountain National Parks. I have also helped to collect research about wolverines, a threatened species in BC. I am the current Golden Bear Aware Community Coordinator where I have been well received in local schools with presentations and displays. I am familiar with threats to wildlife in BC and across Canada as it is something I have been studying for as long as I can remember. I recently took a 3rd year Conservation Biology course at the University of Victoria and realised that I would like to bring this message to youth in order to recognize, celebrate and honour the diversity of life, and empower children and youth to preserve the richness of biodiversity into the future.
